Community Involvement

Majors and minors in the department participate in departmental events and projects throughout the year. Opportunities to exhibit, meet with visiting artists, and participate in workshops frequently occur throughout the year. Scroll through the info below for an overview of the events, and check out the events page for more details about events that are coming up soon.

Art Hop

Art Hop occurs on the first Friday of every month. The Kalamazoo College Community Studio (KCCS) hosts Art Hops throughout the academic year. Stop by the Park Trades Center to see what’s on view at KCCS, and wander through downtown Kalamazoo to get to know the broader art community.

We sometimes accept proposals for Art Hop shows. Reach out to our Post Baccalaureate Fellow if you have an idea for an exhibition you’d like to put together!

Visiting Artists

The department often invites visiting artists to meet with students and/or give public lectures. We encourage all students to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity!

Senior Art Exhibitions

Senior Art Exhibitions take place throughout Spring Quarter each year. Make sure to check out each exhibition, and attend opening receptions, which typically occur on Thursdays at 3:30pm.

SASS: Senior Art SIP Symposium

Each Spring, seniors present their SIPs at our annual Senior Art SIP Symposium (SASS). All majors and minors are expected to attend these presentations to support their classmates and to learn about what SIPs in the department can look like.

Hands-On Exhibition Experience

Curate a show or show your own art in the Light Fine Arts Gallery! Our gallery has openings during fall and winter quarters. If you have an idea for a show, reach out to the post-baccalaureate fellow, a faculty member in the department, or the department chair.
